The Ins & Outs of Commercial Chillers :: Baltimore, Maryland HVAC Services

What is a Commercial Chiller?

Using vapor-compression technology, commercial chillers are used to remove heat from liquid, thus reducing its temperature.

What is Vapor-Compression Technology?

As we alluded to already, vapor-compression technology allows commercial chillers to evaporate heat from the refrigerant. There are four types of compressors that utilize this technology, including:

  • Reciprocating Compressors: These types of compressors use pistons to compress the refrigerant and liquid, causing heat evaporation. These are the most widely used compressors because of ease of maintenance.

  • Scrolling Compressors: These types of compressors use orbiting disks to pull refrigerant into a sealed chamber, where it interacts with the liquid to evaporate heat.

  • Centrifugal Compressors: These types of compressors utilize an impeller wheel to exert force on the refrigerant, compressing it into the liquid and accelerating evaporation.

  • Rotary Screw Compressors: These types of compressors use two helical rotors to pull refrigerant into the chamber, forcing the refrigerant and liquid to mix.

What are the Basic Components of a Commercial Chiller?

Commercial chillers are comprised of four primary components, the compressor, the evaporator, the condenser, and a metering device.

    How do Commercial Chillers work?

A commercial chiller operates with a closed-loop system, meaning that the coolant stays in the chiller and is recycled many times. This refrigerant is used to absorb heat and remove it from the liquid being chilled. The refrigerant is then sent to the compressor, where the heat is evaporated from the refrigerant. The refrigerant is then transported back into the recycling tank to be filtered and re-used.

What are the most popular Types of Refrigerants?

There many different types of refrigerants, but Freon is by far the most popular.
