If we’ve said it once we’ve said it…well, about two or three times…Maryland is in for ANOTHER harsh winter. The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a colder than normal and wetter than normal winter here on the East Coast, and climate experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration agree. So, what are you waiting for? Instead of sitting around and waiting for the snow to come, you should be preparing your home for another cold, snowy winter.
Preparing Your Home for another Harsh Maryland Winter
Reverse Ceiling Fans
Many homeowners do not realize that they can use their fans to help boost the efficiency of their furnace. Wait, what? By reversing the rotation of the fan, you can help re-circulate warm air is resting on your ceiling (remember, hot air rises).
A ceiling fan allows you to lower the thermostat setting a few degrees with no reduction in comfort. The only reduction you will experience is on your BGE bills.
Clean Those Gutters
Your gutters are designed for one purpose and on purpose only: safely remove water from your room. When your gutters are clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris, they cannot do their jobs. As a result, water will back up and fall off the roof wherever it can. In the winter, this becomes slightly more troublesome. When water hits your clogged gutters in the winter, it can freeze there, creating an ice dam. This will prevent water from reaching your gutters. With nowhere else to go, the water will begin to pool and eventually work its way under your shingles and into your attic. Yikes!
Similarly, fall is a great time to repair loose or damaged shingles.
Seal Windows and Doors
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), windows account for 25-40% of your annual heating and cooling costs. Wow! Fortunately, there are some quick and easy ways to help improve the energy efficiency of your existing windows and doors. Caulking and weather stripping can be used to reduce drafts, improve comfort, and reduce energy bills. That’s a win-win if we’ve ever heard one.
Trim Branches Hanging Over Your Home
When branches hang over your home, they present an immediate threat, especially with winter right around the corner. When it snows, the added weight of the snow can cause these branches to snap, damaging your roof and allowing water to leak into your home. Water damage is not far behind.
