Your heat pump or HVAC system will have both a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating and a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating. Each of them measure different aspects of your system. Below, we’ll explain the differences.
HVAC SEER rating
A SEER rating for HVAC and heat pump equipment measures the efficiency of the system. The higher the rating, the more cooling or heating the system puts out for each unit of energy consumed. So, the higher the number, the better. This rating is important for homes in areas with a generally warm climate, but for us here in Maryland, the HSPF rating is more relevant.
Heat pump HSPF rating
Heat pumps generally have a HSPF rating, which is important as our climate here tends to be cooler and makes more use of heating than cooling. The rating measures the efficiency of the heat pump compressor and electrical components of the system, as well as how many BTUs the system can pump per watt-hour of energy. Similarly, the higher the rating, the more efficient. Any heat pump rated above a 7.7 for HSPF and above 12 for SEER earns the Energy Star status.
Both ratings are important, but you especially want to pay attention to the HSPF rating on your heat pump as heating efficiency has the greatest impact in this area. While we do have warm summers, more of the year is spent using the heat, so a heat pump with a low HSPF rating will results on higher energy bills on average.
