Not only are GHPs more energy-efficient, using 25-50% less electricity than conventional heating and cooling systems, but they can also reduce emissions by up to 44% compared to air-source heat pumps and up to 72% compared to electric resistance heating with standard air-conditioning equipment. GHPs also improve indoor humidity control, maintaining about 50% relative indoor humidity.
But such a useful, energy-efficient machine must take up a lot of space, right? Wrong.
Geothermal heat pumps can be installed in new and retrofit situations and requires less space than conventional HVAC systems. And the components in the living space are easily accessible, which increases the convenience factor and helps ensure that the upkeep is done on a timely basis.
But these machines must not last very long, right? Wrong again.
GHPs often last 20+ years and the corresponding underground piping often carries warranties of 25-50 years.
Well, GHPs have to be noisy, right? Well, no.
With no outside condensing units like air conditioners, there’s no concern about noise outside the home. And the two-speed GHP system is so quiet inside the house that users often cannot tell when it is operating.
But geothermal heat pumps must be expensive then, right? Yes…and no.
While the installation of one of these pumps costs several times more than that of an air-source system, the additional costs are returned to you, over time, in the form of energy savings.
