HCFC-22 also known as R-22, is a gas used in most air conditioners prior to 2010, before the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the substance in all new equipment. HCFC-22 was banned because of its ozone-depleting and global warming potential.
New air conditioners are required to use R-410A, a much more environmentally friendly gas. Older air conditioners, however, are still permitted to use R-22, which will continue to be produced in small service quantities until 2020.
However, the U.S. government recently proposed an accelerated phase out of HCFC-22, causing the cost of the refrigerant to skyrocket well over 400%. This has also caused the repair and maintenance costs for systems using R-22 to rise, as well. So if your air conditioner is more than eight years old or seems to require frequent repairs, it may make more sense to consider replacing it with a newer system that uses the approved refrigerant – R-410a.
