Geothermal heat pumps are quickly gaining popularity in the residential heating world. These incredibly efficient heating systems may seem like a lot of money, but the long term savings make the initial investment well worth it.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, geothermal systems are “the most energy efficient, environmentally clean, and cost effective space conditioning systems available today.” That’s because a geothermal system taps into the earth to capture free, renewable energy.
Geothermal Upgrades in Action
1. Bill Davidson: Davidson’s 2,400 square foot circa-1940s Cape Cod was in desperate need of a heating system upgrade. And not only was Davidson unhappy with the home’s oil heating, the Cape Cod did not have any air conditioning. To fix this, the homeowner had a geothermal heat pump installed, eliminating the noisy oil furnace and resulting in more than $1,700 in annual savings.
2. Kelly Palmiotto: A former employee at the Maryland Department of the Environment, Palmiotto was very interested in green building practices. So when it came to renovating her home, Palmiotto knew there was only one heating system for her and her family: a geothermal heat pump. And she could not be happier with her decision. Palmiotto says her home heating and air-conditioning bills are about a third of what they would be with conventional systems.
3. Mark Schultz: Schultz installed a geothermal heat pump in his Annapolis home nearly a decade ago, a decision that the homeowner described as a no-brainer. “If you use geothermal, it eliminates your reliance on foreign oil and you’re no longer taking the tops off mountains in West Virginia to get coal,” said Schultz. Plus, a geothermal heat pump will “typically knock a utility bill in half.”
4. Diocesan Center & Cathedral of the Incarnation: Because of its outdated heating and cooling system, the Diocesan Property Committee decided that it was time to retrofit the Diocesan Center and Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore, Maryland with a new HVAC system. “Something had to be done about the [building’s] aging boilers, furnaces, and air conditioning system,” said Reverend Hal Ley Hayek. “Nothing is newer than 22 years old.” So on February 29, 2012, the Diocesan approved the proposal submitted by Fresh Air Concepts to install a geothermal unit with a variable refrigerant flow system.
