Pre-Winter HVAC Maintenance Tasks for Fall

Pre-Winter HVAC Maintenance

Professional preventive HVAC maintenance is the best way to extend the lifespan of your system and ensure it is running at peak efficiency.

Winter is coming. It may seem like fall just started, but winter will be here before you know it. Are you ready? More importantly, is your home ready, specifically your HVAC equipment? Experts recommend that Baltimore homeowners have their heating and cooling systems inspected and serviced twice a year – once before summer and again before winter. This will help ensure that these systems are operating at peak efficiency to keep you nice and comfortable inside while the weather is less than desirable outside. And it’s going to be a cold, snowy winter here in Baltimore!

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, it is going to colder and snowier than normal throughout Maryland, especially in the northern parts of the state. The coldest periods in January, late December, mid-February, and early March, while the snowiest periods will be mid- and late December, early to mid-January, and late March.

Now just imagine if your heating equipment breaks down in the middle of winter. Brrrrrrrr!

Pre-Winter HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Change Your Air Filters

Ideally, you should change air filters regularly throughout the year – every 2-3 months. However, you should, at a minimum, change the filter before heating and cooling season. This will help increase airflow and efficiency, as well as indoor air quality.

Better Manage Thermostat Settings

Not only does the HVAC equipment comprise one of the largest systems in your home, it is also the single biggest user of energy, making your thermostat an essentially component of your home.

  1. Make Sure it Works: Turn your thermostat to heat and set it to 75 degrees. If you feel warm air coming through your vents, your heating equipment is still working. Check!
  2. A Few Degrees Make a Difference: You can, however, lower the thermostat a few degrees while you sleep or while you are at work to help save money. For every degree, you can expect to cut energy consumption by up to 3-5%.
  3. Programmable Thermostat: A programmable thermostat allows you to better control your temperature settings. After all, why should you heat your home while you aren’t home? A programmable thermostat allows you to schedule your temperature settings so you don’t waste energy. This increased level of control allows a homeowner to decrease energy use when they are not home without sacrificing comfort. It’s what we like to call a win-win. For example, Nest Labs claims that the Nest Thermostat can lower your heating and cooling bills up to 20%.
