With the nice spring weather, now is the perfect time to have your air conditioner (A/C) looked over in order to make sure it is in tip-top operating condition for the hot summer weather we have in store. While A/C systems can be dangerous, and should only be handled by professional HVAC technicians, there are some steps you can take to help maintain your A/C system. Remember, anytime you work on your A/C system the power should always be turned off for your safety.
Keep it clean
Keeping your outdoor condenser and compressor clean is a great way to lengthen the life of your A/C system and prevent any issues from arising. This starts with cleaning or replacing the filters in your A/C system. If the filter becomes too clogged, airflow will be restricted and your system will operate at a reduced efficiency.
It is also important to keep any debris from building up inside the condenser. After removing the side panel of your condenser, you can scoop out and leaves, sticks, and other debris that may have built up.
While the side panel is off, it also would be prudent to clean the condenser coils. Using the soft brush on a vacuum, or a refrigerator coil brush, most dirt buildup can be removed from the coils. During this stage, be careful not to damage or bend the fins surrounding the coils, as this will block airflow.
Check the coolant lines
Over time, the insulating foam that surrounds your coolant lines can degrade, becoming frayed or falling off completely. The insulating foam is there to preserve energy, and needs to be there to keep your A/C system running efficiently. This is an easy job, and requires only re-wrapping the coolant lines with either foam insulation tape or using insulation sleeves.
