Many homeowners are unaware of the options they have when it comes to their thermostat. In fact, did you know that you could save around 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills by simply turning your thermostat back 10-15° for eight hours? It’s true. That is why programmable thermostats are becoming increasingly popular.
A programmable thermostat allows you to schedule your heating and air conditioning use, meaning you can program your systems to turn off when you are asleep or at work and turn on when you wake up or come home. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings (six or more temperature settings a day).
Now you may be thinking: “I can do that manually. Why do I need a programmable thermostat?”
Good question. The answer, however, is quite simple. By scheduling your heating and cooling systems, you are ensuring that your home is always at an optimal temperature when you arrive home. If you try to do this manually, there will almost always be a period of discomfort between manually changing your thermostat settings when you return home and your heating or cooling system bringing your home to the proper temperature. A programmable thermostat eliminates this warm up (or cool down) period, performing that function before you come home after a long day of work.
Now if that isn’t convenient, I don’t know what is!
There are two main types of programmable thermostats to choose from:
Digital Thermostats: These offer the most setback setting, overrides and adjustments for daylight savings time. The only drawback is that they can be difficult for people to program.
Electromechanical Thermostats: These systems often involve pegs or sliding bars and are extremely simple to program.
So you have to ask yourself what you prefer more in your thermostat – functionality or ease of use.
