Summer is quickly coming to an end here in Maryland. The writing is on the wall – literally. Almost any store you go to is advertising “Back to School” sales on everything from school supplies to clothing. Fall will be here before you know it, which means winter is not far behind. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about your home’s heating.
Radiant Heating vs. Forced Air Heating
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, we are in for another cold, snowy winter here in Maryland – “colder and slightly wetter than normal, with above-normal snowfall.” So, as you can imagine, heating will be in high demand this winter. But when was the last time you even though about your home’s HVAC system? And setting the thermostat certainly doesn’t count. Perhaps it’s time to upgrade and think about investing in a radiant heating system.
What is Radiant Heating?
Radiant heating systems work by supplying heat directly to the floor, wall panels, or ceiling of a house instead of blowing heated air through inefficient ductwork, as is the case with a forced air system.
“The systems depend largely on radiant heat transfer – the delivery of heat directly from the hot surface to the people and objects in the room via infrared radiation,” explains Energy.gov, a website run by the United States Energy Department. “Radiant heating is the effect you feel when you can feel the warmth of a hot stovetop element from across the room.”
What Are the Benefits of Radiant Heating?
Radiant heating offer several benefits over traditional, forced air heating systems.
- Energy Efficiency: Metal ductwork is historically inefficient. Radiant heating, meanwhile, eliminates ductwork and improves the energy efficiency of your home. In fact, radiant heating systems are approximately 25% more efficient than traditional heating systems.
- Quiet Comfort: One of the biggest benefits of a radiant heating system is that you will barely know it is there. Unlike nosier forced air systems, radiant heating systems do not generate any noise. And there are no air registers throughout your house. The only way you know it is there is because of the warmth you will feel.
- Allergens: Forced air systems are known to spread allergens throughout a home. Because they do not use forced air – or circulate any air for that matter – radiant heating systems are excellent for those with severe allergies. European studies estimate that as much as 90% of dust mite populations are reduced homes that utilize in radiant heating.
