These tips have included Using Programmable Thermostats, Finding and Sealing Air Leaks, Adding More Attic Insulation, Regular HVAC Maintenance – both residential and commercial – Wrapping Ductwork, and Replacing Air Filters Monthly. Today’s latest installment of winter energy efficiency tips: Turning down the Thermostat. It’s simple, but it works.
Heating accounts for 34% of all annual utility usage, so it makes sense to try and make your building as energy efficient as possible. One easy way to do this is to set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower while you are awake, according to Energy.gov. This will help you save up to 5% on your heating costs. Set the thermostat back another 10 to 15 degrees while you are asleep or away at work, and save another 5% to 15%. It’s that simple. And to make your job even easier, consider installing a programmable thermostat.
A programmable thermostat allows you to set a heating schedule so your HVAC system powers down while you are away, but turns back on before you come home. The end result: you save money without sacrificing comfort.
Of course, your thermostat is just one piece of the energy efficiency puzzle. In order to achieve maximum savings, you must deploy a number of tactics to ensure your HVAC system and your home are both as efficient as possible. If just one part of the puzzle is missing, the end result will not be what you had hoped.
