Summer may be winding down, but your air conditioner is still working tirelessly to keep your home cool. Because of this, you may have noticed your monthly cooling bill has been a little high recently. This is expected with the increased workload, but there are still certain things you can do to ensure you are not paying more than you have to. For starters, you can ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible. This process starts in the attic.
Attic Insulation and your Air Conditioner; what’s the Connection?
The connection between attic insulation and you air conditioner is simple. During the summer, the temperature in Maryland is consistently in the 90s. That hot sun is continually beating down on your roof, heating up your attic. Without the proper amount of attic insulation, this heat will radiate through your roof and into your home. This will cause your air conditioner to work even harder to maintain your desired temperature.
As you can see, having the proper amount of insulation is important. But what is the proper amount? ENERGY STAR recommends an insulation level of R-38, which is approximately 12-15 inches depending on the insulation type. Do you have enough? To find out, perform a visual inspection. . Look across the span of the attic. If you cannot see your floor joists and your insulation is evenly distributed throughout the attic, you probably have enough insulation. If your insulation is below the floor joists, you may be in need of some new insulation.
Of course, all the attic insulation in the world will not make a major difference if your air conditioner is not well maintained. This is where Fresh Air Concepts can help. Lack of proper maintenance by a licensed and qualified HVAC contractor is one of the leading causes of malfunctioning equipment and high operation costs.
