ACCA 12 QH-2011 Existing Homes Evaluation & Performance Improvement

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

The ACCA 12 QH-2011 Existing Homes Evaluation & Performance Improvement standard, developed by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America in cooperation with the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), is the first and only industry-developed nationally recognized standard that establishes how to audit, evaluate, develop a scope of work, perform the work approved by a homeowner, and test the completed work. And now, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has officially recognized ACCA 12 QH-2011.

“ACCA is proud to offer the home performance community with the first standard for existing homes that is in line with other ANSI recognized standards,” said Paul T. Stalknecht, ACCA president and CEO.

Benefits of ACCA 12 QH-2011

  • Provides clear guidelines for how to properly evaluate homes, provide homeowners with solutions, and then perform the work.
  • Requires third party verification to ensure the work was performed correctly, giving additionally credibility to those contractors following these standards.

“We were happy to work with ACCA to create this standard got existing homes,” said RESNET executive director Steve Baden. “RESNET will use the standards as the foundation for its Energy Smart Contractor designation. Having an ANSI standard for existing homes will make the entire industry stronger as a whole.”

Uneven Heating and Cooling in Your Home

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Are you struggling with uneven heating and cooling in your home? Well, instead of opening and closing vents and adjusting your thermostat to compensate, contact the HVAC specialists at Fresh Air Concepts today!

  • Fooling with vents and adjusting the thermostat is a waste of both your time and money!
  • Uneven heating and cooling is not just annoying and uncomfortable, it can also damage your HVAC system – shortening its useful life – and increase your heating and cooling bills.

Tips on Addressing Uneven Heating and Cooling in Your Home

  1. Have Ductwork Inspected: Uneven heating and cooling could be caused by uneven airflow within your ductwork. An airflow imbalance also causes your system to work overtime in order to compensate, running up your heating and cooling bills and shortening the life of your HVAC system.
  2. Variable Speed Motors: Variable speed motors provide more even heating and cooling, and allow for more precise control of airflow throughout the home – helping to make your home’s heating and cooling much more efficient.
  3. HVAC Size Matters: An improperly sized HVAC system could be the source of your uneven heating and cooling. To determine whether your HVAC system is properly sized, contact the HVAC specialists at Fresh Air Concepts for an up-to-date load calculation.

Whether your heating and air conditioning system is new or old, lack of proper maintenance by a licensed and qualified HVAC contractor is one of the leading causes of malfunctioning equipment and high operation costs. In fact, experts estimate that close to 75% of your utility bills are associated with your heating and air conditioner systems.

Fresh Air Concepts offers several membership plans geared towards extending the life of your HVAC system through meticulous inspections and maintenance.

Ductless Heat Pumps Are Popular For Heating and Cooling the Home

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Did you know that heat pumps are essential in your contestant fight for a comfortable home? So if you are living in a home without a heat pump, it is time to start thinking about adding one as soon as possible. But I know what you are currently thinking; “what if my house doesn’t have ductwork in place?”

Well, don’t worry. There is a simple solution to your problem – ductless heat pumps. Also known as mini-split heat pumps or mini splits, these convenient contraptions can meet all of your heating and cooling requirements without ever having to install expensive ductwork.

Similar to standard air-source heat pumps, these devices also have two main components: outdoor compressor or condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. The indoor unit is mounted inside the room and connected to the outdoor unit via refrigerant lines and inter-unit wiring through a 3 1/2″ opening in the wall.

Benefits of Ductless Heat Pumps:

  • Flexible for zoning, making them ideal for cooling and heating individual rooms.
  • Installation is simple (of course this should still be completed by a professional HVAC contractor, like Fresh Air Concepts).
  • The compressor is located outdoors. Therefore, there is far less noise inside your home.
  • There is no need for ductwork.
  • Make your home more energy efficient. Without ducts, there is no chance of energy loss.

HVAC Service Agreements

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Your heating, ventilation, and air condition system – better known as your HVAC system – is an important part of your home. And because the continued professional service of these systems is so vital to their upkeep and efficiency, a preventative service agreement is recommended.

Don’t worry about the price; these agreements – which provide regularly scheduled service and maintenance – prove less expensive than emergency repairs brought on by unattended HVAC units. Below you will find some additional information on these HVAC service agreements:

General Provisions: Will your agreement cover replacement parts and repairs, or just preventative maintenance? Some agreements cover both, while others just stick to maintenance.

A Service Visit: A typical preventative maintenance visit should include:

•           Complete systems safety and functions check

•           Changing of filters

•           The inside and outside coils should be inspected, cleaned and sanitized (if needed)

•           Pumps and motors should be cleaned (if needed)

•           Condensate pans should be cleaned

•           Drain lines should be checked for restrictions

•           Refrigerant levels should be checked.

Is Special Equipment Covered? Some HVAC systems have special filtering and ultraviolet equipment designed to remove contaminants from the air. Not all HVAC maintenance contracts cover these specialty systems.

Pre-Winter Inspection: A good maintenance agreement will include a pre-winter inspection to ensure that your system is working properly before the first cold weather strikes Maryland.

The ultimate goal of these agreements is to give you, the homeowner, peace of mind knowing your HVAC system is running safely and efficiently.

3 Reasons Why Your Heating System Needs Inspection

Friday, October 28th, 2011

It’s that time of year again.  The winter heating system is upon us. Is your heating unit ready for the winter season? When was the last time it was serviced?

The best way to ensure that your system is running trouble-free is to have Fresh Air Concepts inspect your HVAC system. Here are 3 reasons your heating unit requires an annual inspection:

  1. Save Money: A HVAC system that works efficiently will use less fuel and will in turn save you money.  Fresh Air Concepts will be able to properly tune your heating system to make sure it is running as efficiently as possible.
  2. Prevent Breakdowns: The last thing you want or need is for your HVAC system to stop working in the middle of winter. While avoiding annual HVAC inspections may save you money in the short term, the cost of emergency repairs can be quite substantial.
  3. Protect Your Home and Health: A broken or improperly working HVAC unit can cause more harm than simply inefficiently heating your home. In fact, thousands of house fires and reports of carbon monoxide poisoning occur every year due to damaged furnaces and water heating systems.

The best time to have your HVAC system serviced is in the fall. In addition to a visual inspection, one of our technicians will  check for leaks in the pipes, proper ventilation, and the system’s air filter.

For more information or to schedule an HVAC inspection, please contact Fresh Air Concepts by calling 1-800-708-4FAC or click here today!
