Geothermal Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Unless you have researched the topic before, you probably do not know a lot about Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHPs). Well, you’re in luck, because we at Fresh Air Concepts know the ins and outs of these efficient heating and cooling systems.

Geothermal Heat Pumps have several benefits, including:

1. 25 years for the inside components.

2. System life is estimated at 50+ years for the ground loop.

3. GHPs are very efficient way for heating and cooling your home, using 25-50% less energy than conventional heating and cooling systems.

GHPs offer several other advantages over more traditional heating and cooling sources, as well.

Advantages Geothermal Heating/Cooling Systems Have Over Standard HVAC Systems

•  Low Operating Cost

•  No Required Exposed Outdoor Equipment

•  Level Seasonal Electric Demand

•  No On-Site Combustion

•  Long Life Expectancy

•  Low Cost Integrated Water Heating

•  Simplicity

•  Low Maintenance

•  No Supplemental Heat Required

•  Low Environmental Impact

Although these systems cost more initially, GHPs are well worth the investment. Between the lengthy system life, the decreased need for maintenance, and the energy efficiency of GHPs, these systems pay for themselves in the long run

Types of Geothermal Heat Pump Systems

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

We have already told you the benefits of geothermal heat pumps, how geothermal heat pumps work, and the tax incentives associated with commercial geothermal heat pumps; now we are going to get into the five basic types of geothermal heat pumps. These include:

Horizontal (Closed-Loop Systems): Generally the most cost-effective option for residential use, horizontal geothermal heat pumps cut down on installation costs by utilizing a Slinky method of looping pipes in a shorter trench (5 feet deep and 2 feet wide).

Vertical (Closed-Loop Systems): Most often used for large commercial buildings and schools, vertical geothermal heat pumps are perfect for areas where the land required for horizontal loops would be prohibitive. Vertical GHPs minimize the disturbance of existing landscape. Instead of long trenches, vertical systems utilize deep holes (4 inches in diameter and 100-400 feet deep).

Pong/Lake (Closed-Loop Systems): If there is a body of water close by, this may be the most cost-effective option for you! A supply line pipe is run underground from the building to the water and coiled into circles at least eight feet under the surface of the water (this prevents freezing from becoming an issue).

Open-Loop System: An open-loop geothermal heat pump utilizes well or surface body water as the heat exchange fluid throughout the GHP system. Once the water fully circulates through the system, it returns to the ground through the well, a recharge well, or surface discharge.

Hybrid System: Hybrid geothermal heat pumps utilize several geothermal resources or a combination of geothermal sources and outdoor air. These types of systems are designed for areas where cooling needs are significantly larger than heating needs.

Each system is unique and each has its advantages and disadvantages. To find out more about which system is best for your home or business, contact a heating and cooling specialist, like Fresh Air Concepts.

Federal Tax Incentives for Commercial Geothermal Units

Friday, January 20th, 2012

In 2008, geothermal heat pumps were included in section 48(a) of the Internal Revenue Code under “energy property,” creating a 10% tax credit for costs associated with geothermal equipment “placed in service” through 2016. Benefits of this tax credit include:

•10% of total system cost with no limit

•Use credit to offset both regular and alternative minimum taxes (AMT)

• Use credit over multiple years

•10% grant available in lieu of tax credit

•Combine with solar and wind tax credits

•Combine with energy-efficient building deduction

•Geothermal systems put into service between 2008 and 2009 are eligible for a special 50% “bonus” 1st year depreciation

•Energy property may also be eligible for the section 179 deduction, allowing small businesses to write-off 100% of the purchase price the year a geothermal unit was bought

Tax Credit Eligibility

1.     Your building must be located within the United States

2.     Original use begins with taxpayer

3.     The Geothermal Heating and Cooling Unit must be installed between 10/3/2008 and 12/31/2016

Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction

A tax deduction of $1.80 per square foot is available to building owners of new or existing buildings who install the following equipment that reduces a building’s total energy and power cost by 50% or more in comparison to minimum requirements set by ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001.

  1. Interior lighting
  2. building envelope
  3. heating, cooling, ventilation, or hot water systems that reduce

Deductions of $0.60 per square foot are available for lighting, building envelope, or heating and cooling systems that provide at least 1/3 of the 50% savings target.

Additional Information

• IRS Publication 946 provides guidance on the section 179 deduction and how to depreciate property

•In order to claim this tax credit, you will need to fill out IRS form 3468

•Energy savings must be calculated using software approved by the IRS

•While deductions are available primarily to building owners, tenants may be eligible if they make construction expenditures.
