Heat Pump System Design and Function

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Heat pump system design – for both air source and ground source heat pumps – is incredibly simple, requiring just a few key components to deliver desirable results. Both systems make use of renewable sources of energy to provide complete heating and cooling solutions.

Heat Pump System Main Components

  • Compressor
  • Fan
  • Copper Tubing
  • High Pressure Safety Switch
  • Reversing Valve
  • Defrost Control
  • Protective Wire Meshing

Heat Pump as a Primary Cooling System: The heat pump is a very efficient and reliable cooling system and can provide cooling to a building via its own operations without the need for additional cooling systems, such as CAV and VAV.

Heat Pump as a Primary Heating System: By changing the direction of the refrigerant flow, you can transform your heat pump into a heating system.

Benefits of Heat Pump Systems

  1. 1. Since heat pumps do not require traditional style boiler or chiller to perform both heating and cooling functions, these systems tend to cost less.
  2. 2. Heat pump systems are incredibly efficient, which also helps to save you more money.Heat pump efficiency is measured with two distinct ratings. While in the cooling mode, heat pumps receive a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER number. SEER is like gas mileage. The higher the gas mileage or SEER, the more efficient the automobile or system is. Most new heat pumps rate between 13.0 and 19.0 SEER. While in the heating mode, heat pumps also receive a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF rating. Again, the higher the number, the more efficiently the system works. Most new units have ratings between 7.7 and 9.0 HSPF.

Uneven Heating and Cooling in Your Home

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Are you struggling with uneven heating and cooling in your home? Well, instead of opening and closing vents and adjusting your thermostat to compensate, contact the HVAC specialists at Fresh Air Concepts today!

  • Fooling with vents and adjusting the thermostat is a waste of both your time and money!
  • Uneven heating and cooling is not just annoying and uncomfortable, it can also damage your HVAC system – shortening its useful life – and increase your heating and cooling bills.

Tips on Addressing Uneven Heating and Cooling in Your Home

  1. Have Ductwork Inspected: Uneven heating and cooling could be caused by uneven airflow within your ductwork. An airflow imbalance also causes your system to work overtime in order to compensate, running up your heating and cooling bills and shortening the life of your HVAC system.
  2. Variable Speed Motors: Variable speed motors provide more even heating and cooling, and allow for more precise control of airflow throughout the home – helping to make your home’s heating and cooling much more efficient.
  3. HVAC Size Matters: An improperly sized HVAC system could be the source of your uneven heating and cooling. To determine whether your HVAC system is properly sized, contact the HVAC specialists at Fresh Air Concepts for an up-to-date load calculation.

Whether your heating and air conditioning system is new or old, lack of proper maintenance by a licensed and qualified HVAC contractor is one of the leading causes of malfunctioning equipment and high operation costs. In fact, experts estimate that close to 75% of your utility bills are associated with your heating and air conditioner systems.

Fresh Air Concepts offers several membership plans geared towards extending the life of your HVAC system through meticulous inspections and maintenance.

Types of Heating Systems

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

There are numerous central heating systems on the market today, most of which comprise of a boiler, radiator, and pipework. But which central heating system is best for you, your home, your needs, and, most importantly, your budget?

The right heating system is crucial in the battle to keep your home at a comfortable temperature, while still maintaining energy efficiency.

Two Main Types of Central Heating Systems

1. Pumped/Vented: These are the most common types of central heating systems. A pumped/vented Central Heating System has a feed and expansion tank, which supplies your home with hot water and provides the radiators with heat. The tank is designed to compensate for any water expansion that is caused by the heating process.

2. Sealed: With sealed heating systems, no water tank is needed. The whole system is sealed and unvented. The benefits of a sealed system include: no risk of freezing pipes in the loft; no maintenance work on the tank or pipes that would be in the loft in a pumped/vented system; reduces the risk of leaking; reduced risk of airlocks, corrosion and sludge as there isn’t a chance of air being drawn down into the system through open vents as the system is sealed; and it can be flushed out under pressure if needed by the mains water supply.

No matter which central heating system you choose, you will not be disappointed. These heating units are worth the money. They are cheaper to run. They offer all around control. And they are incredibly efficient.

Geothermal Heat Pump Brings Great Savings

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) are not only incredibly efficient at heating and cooling your home, but they also save you money in the process. How do GHPs accomplish this? Well, as we already said, they are extremely efficient. GHPs use up to 44% less energy than air-source heat pumps and as much as 72% less energy than other conventional heating and cooling solutions. And that leads to more money in your pocket!

What Makes Geothermal Heat Pumps So Energy Efficient?

While traditional air-source pumps draw heat from the outside air, geothermal pumps work by taking heat from the Earth’s surface. This proves to be much more energy efficient, because while the temperature of the outside air is in constant flux, the temperature below the Earth’s surface remains at a constant 50°F.

Additional Benefits of Geothermal Heat Pumps

• Geothermal Heat Pumps are quieter than traditional heating and cooling units.

• GHPs’ design flexibility allows them to be installed as part of newly-constructed homes or in retrofit situations.

• Geothermal Heat Pump hardware takes up less room than other systems, freeing up space in your home.

• These heat pumps are incredibly durable and last longer than traditional systems. The underground piping often carries warranties of 25–50 years, while the heat pumps, themselves, often last 20 years or more.

• GHPs require less maintenance than other heating and cooling systems.

• And if the geothermal pump has a two-speed compressor and variable fans, you can enjoy even more cost-savings on your energy bills.

If you have any questions about the Money Saving Benefits of Geothermal Heat Pumps, please contact Fresh Air Concepts by calling 1-800-708-4FAC or click here today!

Ductless Heat Pumps Are Popular For Heating and Cooling the Home

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Did you know that heat pumps are essential in your contestant fight for a comfortable home? So if you are living in a home without a heat pump, it is time to start thinking about adding one as soon as possible. But I know what you are currently thinking; “what if my house doesn’t have ductwork in place?”

Well, don’t worry. There is a simple solution to your problem – ductless heat pumps. Also known as mini-split heat pumps or mini splits, these convenient contraptions can meet all of your heating and cooling requirements without ever having to install expensive ductwork.

Similar to standard air-source heat pumps, these devices also have two main components: outdoor compressor or condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. The indoor unit is mounted inside the room and connected to the outdoor unit via refrigerant lines and inter-unit wiring through a 3 1/2″ opening in the wall.

Benefits of Ductless Heat Pumps:

  • Flexible for zoning, making them ideal for cooling and heating individual rooms.
  • Installation is simple (of course this should still be completed by a professional HVAC contractor, like Fresh Air Concepts).
  • The compressor is located outdoors. Therefore, there is far less noise inside your home.
  • There is no need for ductwork.
  • Make your home more energy efficient. Without ducts, there is no chance of energy loss.

HVAC Service Agreements

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Your heating, ventilation, and air condition system – better known as your HVAC system – is an important part of your home. And because the continued professional service of these systems is so vital to their upkeep and efficiency, a preventative service agreement is recommended.

Don’t worry about the price; these agreements – which provide regularly scheduled service and maintenance – prove less expensive than emergency repairs brought on by unattended HVAC units. Below you will find some additional information on these HVAC service agreements:

General Provisions: Will your agreement cover replacement parts and repairs, or just preventative maintenance? Some agreements cover both, while others just stick to maintenance.

A Service Visit: A typical preventative maintenance visit should include:

•           Complete systems safety and functions check

•           Changing of filters

•           The inside and outside coils should be inspected, cleaned and sanitized (if needed)

•           Pumps and motors should be cleaned (if needed)

•           Condensate pans should be cleaned

•           Drain lines should be checked for restrictions

•           Refrigerant levels should be checked.

Is Special Equipment Covered? Some HVAC systems have special filtering and ultraviolet equipment designed to remove contaminants from the air. Not all HVAC maintenance contracts cover these specialty systems.

Pre-Winter Inspection: A good maintenance agreement will include a pre-winter inspection to ensure that your system is working properly before the first cold weather strikes Maryland.

The ultimate goal of these agreements is to give you, the homeowner, peace of mind knowing your HVAC system is running safely and efficiently.

If you are interested in an HVAC Service Contract or if you have any questions, please contact Fresh Air Concepts by calling 1-800-708-4FAC or click here today!

Protect Your Health and Safety With a Licensed Heating Contractor

Friday, November 4th, 2011

As heating and cooling technology continues to improve, the instillation, maintenance, and repair of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning units (HVAC) becomes increasingly complex. For this reasons, it is important to leave your HVAC upkeep to a heating and cooling professional.

While trying to install or repair your HVAC unit yourself may seem like a great money-saving idea, it may actually cost you more money down the road. Professionals know what they are doing; you don’t. Attempting any HVAC work yourself could damage your system, requiring costly future repairs. So doesn’t it make more sense to spend a little money now for professional installation or maintenance than a lot of money down the road for expensive repairs?

Furthermore, an HVAC expert will be able to ensure that your system is running as efficiently as possible, saving you money on your monthly energy bills.

The only way to be completely sure that your HVAC unit is running the way it should is to entrust your system’s installation, maintenance and repair to a qualified, professional HVAC contractor.

For more information or to schedule any HVAC work, please contact Fresh Air Concepts by calling 1-800-708-4FAC or click here today!
