What the R-22 Phase Out Means to your Business

Friday, March 30th, 2012

The 1990 Clean Air Act called for the mandatory phase out of R-22 (an ozone depleting substance), better known to the public as Freon. The phase out works by slowly mandating the use of R-22 until the point of the refrigerant’s nonexistence.

  1. Per U.S. EPA regulations, new R-22 cannot be used in new systems effective in 2010
  2. Service quantities of the refrigerant may be produced until 2020

The U.S. government recently proposed an accelerated phase out of R-22, causing the cost of the refrigerant to skyrocket over 400% in a two-month period. This has also caused the repair and maintenance costs for systems using R-22 to rise, as well.

Additionally, many suppliers have begun to restrict the quantity of R-22 that companies can purchase.

What does this mean for your business?

  1. If you have a system that uses R-22, you will still be able to have your system repaired; however, your repair bill will reflect the higher cost for Freon.
  2. If your system is more than eight years old, it may be time to consider replacing it with a newer system that uses the approved refrigerant – R-410a.

If you have any questions about the Phase Out of R-22 (Freon), please contact Fresh Air Concepts by calling 1-800-708-4FAC or click here today!

Ductless Heat Pumps Are Popular For Heating and Cooling the Home

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Did you know that heat pumps are essential in your contestant fight for a comfortable home? So if you are living in a home without a heat pump, it is time to start thinking about adding one as soon as possible. But I know what you are currently thinking; “what if my house doesn’t have ductwork in place?”

Well, don’t worry. There is a simple solution to your problem – ductless heat pumps. Also known as mini-split heat pumps or mini splits, these convenient contraptions can meet all of your heating and cooling requirements without ever having to install expensive ductwork.

Similar to standard air-source heat pumps, these devices also have two main components: outdoor compressor or condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. The indoor unit is mounted inside the room and connected to the outdoor unit via refrigerant lines and inter-unit wiring through a 3 1/2″ opening in the wall.

Benefits of Ductless Heat Pumps:

  • Flexible for zoning, making them ideal for cooling and heating individual rooms.
  • Installation is simple (of course this should still be completed by a professional HVAC contractor, like Fresh Air Concepts).
  • The compressor is located outdoors. Therefore, there is far less noise inside your home.
  • There is no need for ductwork.
  • Make your home more energy efficient. Without ducts, there is no chance of energy loss.

What Factors to Consider When Buying Room Air Cleaner, Air Purifier

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Indoor air pollutants are harmful materials that infect your home, significantly diminishing your indoor air quality. The most common pollutants include dust, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, smoke, bacteria, and mold. But don’t fret; there are ways to counteract these pesky pollutants.

  1. Get down to the source: Find the source of the pollution and eliminate it. Or at least try to reduce its emissions.
  2. Ventilation: Open doors and windows to let some fresh air in (weather permitting). Furthermore, using exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen will also help remove contaminants.
  3. Air Cleaners: There are two different types of air cleaning devices: the first cleans the air in the whole house while the second cleans the air in a single room.

Choosing an air purifier may seem like a daunting task, but trust us; it’s not. Below you will find a few helpful tips to make your search a little easier.

Consider room size: Most air purifiers state the size of the room they clean. Know what you need and buy accordingly.

What type of pollutants are you dealing with? Different systems work best against different contaminants. Figure out what you need and find an air purifier that fits that need.

Easy maintenance: You don’t want to increase your housework so find a system that requires little maintenance. Though you have to remember that no matter what system you choose, it will require some level of annual maintenance.

Noise, noise, and did we mention noise? If this unit is to be used in your bedroom, consider purchasing an air purifier that is designed to operate quietly.

Air changes per hour: The more changes per hour, the better your indoor air quality.

Filters: How often do they need to be replaced? How much do they cost? Remember, not all filters are created equal.

Energy efficiency: Check the energy consumption for each unit.

Warranty: This one is a no brainer. Find a unit that not only fits your needs, but also has a good warranty.

The indoor air quality of your home is nothing to play around with. Considering that most people spend 90 percent of their time indoors, breathing an estimated 2,300 gallons of air every day, indoor air can be a key factor in your quality of life. Indoor air pollution can aggravate allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. So get down to business and ensure that your family is properly protected.

Fresh Air Concepts has been at the forefront of specializing in air purification systems since 2004. Isn’t it time you breathed easier?
