The 1990 Clean Air Act called for the mandatory phase out of R-22 (an ozone depleting substance), better known to the public as Freon. The phase out works by slowly mandating the use of R-22 until the point of the refrigerant’s nonexistence.
- Per U.S. EPA regulations, new R-22 cannot be used in new systems effective in 2010
- Service quantities of the refrigerant may be produced until 2020
The U.S. government recently proposed an accelerated phase out of R-22, causing the cost of the refrigerant to skyrocket over 400% in a two-month period. This has also caused the repair and maintenance costs for systems using R-22 to rise, as well.
Additionally, many suppliers have begun to restrict the quantity of R-22 that companies can purchase.
What does this mean for your business?
- If you have a system that uses R-22, you will still be able to have your system repaired; however, your repair bill will reflect the higher cost for Freon.
- If your system is more than eight years old, it may be time to consider replacing it with a newer system that uses the approved refrigerant – R-410a.
